The Morgan Library & Museum<\/a> is located on Madison Avenue inside what began as J.P. Morgan\u2019s private library back in the early 1900s. From the street, it feels fairly quiet. Inside, it\u2019s packed with rare books, handwritten manuscripts, historic rooms, rotating exhibitions, and one of the most impressive libraries in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of that comes down to the building itself. The original library rooms are incredible, but the collections are what keep the museum interesting beyond the architecture. One gallery may focus on Renaissance manuscripts. Another may center on literary drafts, music history, illustration, photography, or famous correspondence pulled directly from the archives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Original Library Still Steals the Show<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

J.P. Morgan hired architect Charles McKim to design the library in 1906, and most of the original details are still intact. The central library has large walnut bookshelves, painted ceilings, massive chandeliers, and narrow upper-level balconies that wrap around the collection. Every room feels incredibly detailed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But you can still tell this began as somebody\u2019s private library. That scale changes the experience a bit. Visitors aren\u2019t wandering through endless wings trying to cover everything in one afternoon. The rooms stay personal and approachable. One of the most interesting spaces inside the museum is the preserved office of Belle da Costa Greene<\/a>. The newer portions of the museum look entirely different. Renzo Piano redesigned parts of the campus in the 2000s. He added brighter galleries, glass walkways, and a central atrium that connects the older buildings together. The transition works surprisingly well. You still get the historic library experience, but the updated galleries give the museum a little extra room for larger exhibitions and public programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
