With nine major professional sports teams in the area, New York City is – without question – one of the top sports towns in the world. With that in mind, it’s easy to imagine that there’s no shortage of sports bars in the Five Boroughs. Even better, New York is a melting pot of people and cultures, so the better sports bars make it possible for people from anywhere in the country, or world, to be able to watch their favorite spots, whether it’s cricket or Formula 1 racing. And the best sports bars match this with an equally inspired menu, drink selection, or other feature (yes, there are bars with mechanical bulls or miniature golf) that separates it from the pack. Here are some tips from our staff – the real insiders – on the places you can go for food, sports, and a guaranteed good time.

Blue Haven

108 West Houston Street, New York, NY 10012
There’s certainly no shortage of pubs and clubs in Greenwich Village, but stepping into Blue Haven is at once both comforting and surprising. The space is warm and inviting and, of course, covered with TVs for maximum viewing. The surprising part is that Blue Haven goes above and beyond bar food. Along with fantastic standards such as burgers and wings, we were blown away by the Fitzrib sandwich and waffle fries. Plus, the back room is large enough for birthdays and other celebrations.

Shorty’s

Locations in Flatiron/NoMad, Hell’s Kitchen, Financial District, Upper East Side, and Brooklyn
A few of us at Arlo have developed a pretty serious affinity for the NoMad location at 66 Madison Avenue, between 27th & 28th Streets. Self-proclaimed as serving the most authentic cheesesteak in New York, we highly recommend ordering with the Cheese Whiz and friend onions. Plenty of beers on tap and a good number of flatscreen TVs. Great place to cheer on your favorite team during football season.

The 13th Step

149 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10003
With an eight-hour happy hour every day, plenty of drink specials, and an unbelievably friendly staff, The 13th Step is hard to beat – and easily one of our favorites. There are 32 high-def flatscreens, which means you can catch just about any game you want. And if you’re in the mood for a game, there’s even a section of the bar reserved for beer pong! With a laid-back vibe and great prices, it’s hard to go wrong here.

House of Brews

302 West 51st Street, New York, NY 10019
With a name like “House of Brews,” they better deliver – and they do. All of the popular beers plus an expansive selection of craft brews – many of them on tap – matches a solid menu. A little-known secret is the weekend brunch, which is a favorite foodie spot in the area. It’s a big place so plenty of screens throughout.

Stout

Locations in Midtown, Financial District, and Grand Central Station
Despite its warehouse-sized space, Stout gives off the vibe of a tiny neighborhood tavern. And with a name like “Stout,” you can rest assured there’s a wide selection of its namesake drink both on tap and in bottles. With the midtown location so close to Madison Square Garden, Stout is the perfect place for pre-gaming and post-gaming. And the extensive whiskey selection is sure to have some brands you’ve never seen before.

Bronx Alehouse

216 West 238th Street, Bronx, NY 10463
This is a great spot to come and catch a game, meet up with friends, or even have an intimate date night. With “Alehouse” in the name, you can bet they’re pretty serious with the beer here – and you’d be right. There’s really something for everyone here, and if you go, be sure to check out the everything bagel fries.

Rock & Reilly’s NYC

218 West 35th Street, New York, NY 10001
Rock & Reilly’s may be one of the most upscale sports bars you’ll ever visit, and that should be reason enough to check it out. Plenty of outdoor rooftop seating, much of it covered, makes for an expansive space and awesome views of midtown. The views inside are equally grand as flatscreens circle the bar, restaurant, and even the outdoor areas. Add in the gastropub menu, and you’ll quickly understand why we consider R&R a hidden gem!

The Ainsworth

Locations in Midtown, Financial District, East Village, and Chelsea
It’s easy to feel comfortable here whether you’re taking in a game or getting to know the extensive menu – and equally impressive wine and drink list – with someone special. Plenty of screens remind you it’s a sports bar, but they aren’t overwhelming. Don’t miss the award-winning Hanger Burger Meatball built with bulgogi marinade, pickled jalapeños and ribbons of parmesan cheese.
