Few neighborhoods in the world command the creative energy that SoHo does in summer. The cast-iron facades, cobblestone streets, and sun-filled lofts create a backdrop that has drawn architects, designers, and tastemakers to lower Manhattan for decades. At the center of it all sits the SoHo Design District, a curated collection of internationally renowned showrooms, design brands, and experiential spaces that makes SoHo the undisputed capital of interior design in NYC.

What Is the SoHo Design District?

Since its inception in 2014, the SoHo Design District has counted among its members some of the best national and international design brands. Operating as a nonprofit organization, the SDD unites high-end furnishing companies, design firms, and creative businesses under one neighborhood identity, organizing events, showroom tours, and collaborative programming throughout the year.

Its initiatives include coordinated in-store receptions and design talks, coordinated calendars for sales and promotions, and collaborations with local and international institutions during important moments of the city’s design calendar. The result is a neighborhood experience unlike anything else in New York,  one where a single afternoon of walking from showroom to showroom delivers more design inspiration than most people find in a year.

World-Class SoHo Furniture Showrooms

The SoHo Design District’s strength lies in the depth and quality of its member showrooms. Founding members include globally recognized names such as Artemide, Cassina, Design Within Reach, Foscarini, Fritz Hansen, and Cappellini, brands that define contemporary furniture, lighting, and home design at the highest level. Walking into these SoHo furniture showrooms feels less like shopping and more like visiting a living design museum, where every piece tells a story about craft, material, and innovation.

Each showroom brings its own perspective and personality. Some specialize in Italian modernism, others in Scandinavian minimalism, and still others push the boundaries of what furniture and lighting design can achieve. Together, they create a rich, layered environment where design professionals and curious visitors alike can explore what’s new, what’s next, and what’s timeless in the world of interiors.

Summer Design Events: Extended Season and Beyond

While the NYCxDesign Festival marks the official launch of the design season each spring, the SoHo Design District’s creative energy carries well into summer, and that’s when the neighborhood truly hits its stride. Several exhibitions and installations that debuted during festival week remain open through June and beyond, giving visitors who missed the initial rush a chance to experience the season’s most talked-about work at a more relaxed pace.

Among the standouts extending into summer, USM Modular Furniture’s collaboration with Pinch Food Design at 28–30 Greene Street runs through June 19, exploring how design functions for food through unexpected and playful installations. Meanwhile, The Future Perfect on Saint Luke’s Place hosts Nightlights, a show featuring contributions from 130 artists, running through June 26.

The SoHo Design District also programs its own signature summer events independent of any festival. Interactive SoHo design scavenger hunts and neighborhood exploration experiences invite participants to discover new collections, meet designers, and experience the showrooms in a more intimate, off-peak setting. It’s one of the most genuinely fun afternoons the neighborhood offers, and a perfect reason to visit SoHo when the rest of the city has slowed down.

Pop-Ups and What’s New This Season

SoHo’s pop-up culture adds another dimension to the summer experience. Broadway, Spring Street, Prince Street, and Greene Street generate consistent pedestrian flow throughout the week, making them natural stages for brand activations, temporary installations, and immersive retail concepts that complement the permanent showroom landscape.

New collections fresh from Milan Design Week frequently make their North American debuts in SoHo each summer, giving visitors first access to what the international design world is producing right now.
