When the holiday season arrives in Washington DC, the city transforms into a festive wonderland of twinkling lights, seasonal scents, and bustling open-air markets. Whether you’re searching for one-of-a-kind handcrafted jewelry, locally made art, or gourmet treats, DC’s holiday markets offer a charming alternative to big-box shopping. Here’s your guide to the best markets where you can discover unique treasures while supporting small businesses and local artisans.

DowntownDC Holiday Market

Celebrating its 21st season, the DowntownDC Holiday Market occupies F Street NW between 7th and 9th Streets, right outside the National Portrait Gallery.

What Makes It Special: This year’s market features 119 small and local businesses, including more than 20 first-time participants. The vendors represent a diverse mix of local, women-owned, BIPOC-owned, and LGBTQIA+ businesses, offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and artwork to home decor and gourmet treats.

Beyond shopping, the market creates a full holiday experience with live entertainment on the main stage Thursday through Sunday, the DC Dream Wall, where visitors can share their holiday wishes, and appearances from Santa, Mrs. Claus, and beloved characters like the Grinch. Warm up with seasonal drinks at the Winter Chalet bar by Dirty Habit while you browse.

When to Visit: November 21 through December 23, 2025 (closed Thanksgiving Day). Hours vary by day, with extended hours on weekends.

Getting There: The market is steps from the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station, making it easily accessible.

DC Holiday Market at Dupont Circle

The DC Holiday Market brings 35-plus small businesses to New Hampshire Avenue NW in Dupont Circle, running through December 23. This newer market has quickly become a neighborhood favorite for its cozy atmosphere and curated selection of vendors.

What You’ll Find: Expect artisans, boutique brands, worldwide handcrafts, and unique gift items in a more intimate setting than its downtown counterpart. The market features bright festive décor and is conveniently located near Kramerbooks & Café, perfect for grabbing a coffee or meal before or after shopping. Don’t miss sweet treats from Migue’s Mini Donuts and Capital Candy Jar’s hot roasted nuts as you browse.

When to Visit: Now through December 23, 2025 (closed Thanksgiving and select Mondays). Monday–Friday: 12–8pm, Saturday-Sunday: 11am–8pm.

Why Visit: The Dupont Circle location offers a more neighborhood-focused experience just two blocks from the Dupont Circle Metro station, with the added bonus of exploring the area’s shops and restaurants.

Swedish Holiday Market

Experience authentic Swedish holiday traditions at this charming market hosted by the Embassy of Sweden. The Swedish Holiday Market, held on December 6 at House of Sweden, features traditional Scandinavian crafts, foods, and holiday goods and—after shopping—a procession of the St. Lucia Choir making their way from the embassy to Georgetown Waterfront, where you can sample non-alcoholic Glögg and traditional Swedish holiday treats. The market coincides with Georgetown’s holiday festivities, where over 40 shops and restaurants offer special discounts and festive pop-ups. Admission ranges from $12–$17, and hours are from 10am–5pm.

National Harbor Christmas Market

Just across the Potomac in Maryland, the National Harbor Christmas Market and Holiday Craft Show takes place at American Way Outdoor Park from November 29 through December 21. The free outdoor market features dozens of vendors selling handmade crafts, holiday decorations, and unique gifts. After shopping, you can explore National Harbor’s other holiday attractions, including the nightly tree lighting show with its 60-foot RGB tree and spectacular light display accompanied by holiday music.

Del Ray’s Fine Art & Fine Craft Market

Now in its 30th year, Del Ray Artisans host weekend markets featuring rotating local artists with an impressive array of handmade goods. This Alexandria neighborhood gem offers a more intimate, gallery-style shopping experience where you can meet artists and learn about their creative processes. The market runs for three weekends (between December 5 and 22), with different artists rotating through, so multiple visits mean discovering new treasures each time. Expect to find handmade jewelry, candles, ceramics, paintings, textiles, and much more, all created by local artisans.

What to Look For at DC Holiday Markets

Handcrafted Jewelry: Many markets feature local jewelers creating everything from delicate silver pieces to bold statement necklaces, often using sustainable materials and unique techniques.

Original Artwork: From paintings and prints to pottery and sculptures, you’ll find pieces created by DC-area artists that capture the city’s spirit and creativity.

Home Goods and Décor: Discover hand-poured candles, custom textiles, wooden home accessories, and seasonal decorations that add personal touches to your space.

Gourmet Food Items: Look for locally made jams, honey, hot sauces, baked goods, and specialty chocolates that make excellent hostess gifts or stocking stuffers.

Fashion and Accessories: Find handmade scarves, hats, bags, and clothing from local designers who bring fresh perspectives to classic styles.

Make the Most of Your Market Visit

Go Early in the Season: Markets are less crowded in late November and early December, giving you more time to chat with artisans about their work.

Bring Cash and Cards: While most vendors accept cards, some smaller artisans may prefer cash. Having both options ensures you won’t miss out on the perfect gift.

Dress in Layers: You’ll be outdoors, but crowds and movement keep you warmer than you’d expect. Layers let you adjust as needed.

Make It an Experience: Plan to spend a few hours browsing, eating, and soaking in the atmosphere. Bring friends or family and make it a holiday outing rather than just a shopping trip.

Ask Questions: Artisans love talking about their creative process. Don’t hesitate to learn the story behind a piece—it makes your gift even more meaningful.

Support Local: Remember that every purchase directly supports small business owners and artists in your community, making your holiday shopping feel more purposeful.

Washington DC’s holiday markets offer so much more than shopping—they’re gathering places where community and celebration converge. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect gift or simply want to immerse yourself in holiday vibes and seasonal joy, these markets deliver an authentic, memorable experience. Happy shopping!
